Avoiding an Asteroid Collision

TAU researchers reveal a new dimension in the study of asteroid pairs
Courtesy of American Friends of Tel Aviv University
Though it was once believed that all asteroids are giant pieces of solid rock, later hypotheses have it that some are actually a collection of small gravel-sized rocks, held together by gravity. If one of these "rubble piles" spins fast enough, it's speculated that pieces could separate from it through centrifugal force and form a second collection — in effect, a second asteroid.
Now researchers at Tel Aviv University, in collaboration with an international group of scientists, have proved the existence of these theoretical "separated asteroid" pairs.
Ph.D. student David Polishook of Tel Aviv University's Department of Geophysics and Planetary Sciences and his supervisor Dr. Noah Brosch of the university's School of Physics and Astronomy say the research has not only verified a theory, but could have greater implications if an asteroid passes close to earth. Instead of a solid mountain colliding with earth's surface, says Dr. Brosch, the planet would be pelted with the innumerable pebbles and rocks that comprise it, like a shotgun blast instead of a single cannonball. This knowledge could guide the defensive tactics to be taken if an asteroid were on track to collide with the Earth.
A large part of the research for the study, recently published in the journal Nature, was done at Tel Aviv University's Wise Observatory, located deep in the Negev Desert — the first and only modern astronomical observatory in the Middle East.

Harvey Krueger Elected Chairman of TAU's International Board of Governors

Harvey Krueger Elected Chairman of TAU's International Board of Governors
With virtually unanimous approval, Tel Aviv University's Board of Governors appointed Harvey M. Krueger its new Chairman on August 10, 2010.
Currently Vice Chairman of Barclays Capital, Krueger is a highly experienced investor in Israeli companies and is credited with almost single-handedly opening the international capital markets to Israeli governmental and corporate securities. Previously, he served as Vice Chairman of Lehman Brothers, Inc.
Krueger succeeds Robert (Bobby) Goldberg of Cleveland OH, whose four-year term is regarded as especially productive. Both Goldberg and TAU President Prof. Joseph Klafter warmly endorsed Krueger's nomination and appointment. In addition to a celebrated record of financial, investment, and managerial achievement, Krueger brings a long and steadfast commitment to Israel and its institutions to the Board of Governors chair.
The scope of his civic involvement, both in the U.S. and in Israel, is far-ranging. He is a former Chairman and current Trustee of the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum of the Smithsonian Institute, and is a member of the Boards of Directors of Beth Hatefutsoth, Beth Israel Medical Center in New York and its parent Continuum Health Partners, and the Board of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee.
Krueger is deeply committed to strengthening higher education. He was Chairman of the Board of Governors of The Hebrew University of Jerusalem for nine years, was President and Chairman of the American Friends of the Hebrew University, and is past Chairman of the Peres Center for Peace. He served on the Advisory Board of Carnegie Mellon University Department of History and was a Visiting Professor at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland.
Krueger's renown in the financial world is global. In 1977, he merged Kuhn, Loeb, & Co., the investment banking firm of which he was President and CEO, with Lehman Brothers, and served with distinction as Vice Chairman of the merged entity. Prior to joining Kuhn, Loeb in 1959, Mr. Krueger worked for the prestigious law firm of Cravath, Swaine, and Moore for five years.
In addition to Lehman Brothers, he also served on the Board of Directors of a number of American and Israeli companies, including Delta Galil Industries, Ltd., RG Barry Corp., and Automatic Data Processing, Inc. He is presently a Director of Bernard Chaus, Inc., Hansard Global plc, and Duff & Phelps.
He holds a B.A. from Columbia College and a J.D. from Columbia Law School
