Support Cutting Edge Research
Tel Aviv University is at the cutting edge of various academic disciplines. Its scientific advances may very well revolutionize medical treatment or its security-related research may ultimately defend Israel.
To illustrate: Professor Doron Shabat, of the Raymond and Beverly Sackler School of Chemistry has made a breakthrough in explosives detection. While doing research on novel drug-delivery biomolecules that carry cancer-killing doses of medication directly to tumors, Professor Shabat discovered that by installing a sensor unit at the head of his carefully engineered molecules, he could identify explosive chemicals such as triacetone triperoxide (TATP). Shabat is able to trace minute amounts of TATP in real field conditions such as at an airport check-in counter.
Professor Abraham Katzir at the Raymond and Beverly Sackler School of Physics and Astronomy has developed a system for closing incisions after surgery. This small pen-shaped device emits a laser beam that can bond together cut tissue. An alternative to stitches or staples, the method is quicker, heals faster, involves less risk of infection and leaves less scarring. The ability to precisely control the heat of the laser beam is the secret of the success of this innovative medical device.
